A horse may have a white marking on one or more of its legs and different names are given according to extent of these leg markings. Leg markings are present from birth and do not change as the horse ages.

A white fetlock, pastern or coronet is a white leg marking that extends only as far up the horse's leg as the part named.

A sock is a white leg marking that extends up the horse's leg covering the fetlock and part of the cannon bone.

A stocking is a white leg marking that extends as far up the horse's leg as the knee or hock.
