Preparing A Horse To Sell At Auction

The better the horse is prepared for the auction, the better the price that will be obtained.  Therefore check out our tips and advice for preparing a horse to sell at auction.

Before Auction Day

  • In the weeks leading up to the auction feed and exercise the horse as necessary to ensure that it is in the best condition for the auction.
  • Bath, clip and/or trim the horse to ensure it is neat and tidy eg pull or hog the mane and pull the tail, trim feathers, whiskers and ears, etc as appropriate for the breed.
  • Keep the horse clean and well groomed leading up to the auction to ensure a nice shiny coat on the day of the auction.
  • Train the horse to walk and trot well in hand, lunge or loose school on the flat and over jumps or under saddle according to how the horse will be shown off at auction.
  • In the week prior to the auction get the hooves trimmed and shod (unless the horse is normally barefoot) to ensure the feet are neat and tidy on the day of the auction.
  • If the horse is to be shown in hand at the auction, ensure any headcollar and lead rope or in-hand bridle and lead is in good condition and clean.
  • If the horse is to be shown ridden in the auction, check tack to ensure it is in good condition and clean it.

On The Day Of The Auction

  • Groom the horse thoroughly and ensure that nose and eyes are clean.
  • Plait the mane and tail as appropriate for the breed.
  • Wash any white markings to ensure they are clean.
  • Ensure any handler or rider is smartly dressed.
  • Take a grooming kit, dry shampoo, etc to the auction for any last minute clean ups before going into the auction ring.
  • Take the horse's passport as this will be required to book the horse into the auction on arrival and handed over to the successful buyer if the horse is sold.
  • Oil the horse's hooves prior to going into the auction ring.
